Why did you choose to follow a career in the hospitality and tourism industry?
I developed a passion for the hospitality industry from a young age, which was further strengthened when I began my first job in a café at 16. It was there that I discovered a genuine love for customer service. There is something incredibly rewarding about creating positive experiences and putting a smile on someone’s face.
Why did you initially choose to study with PIHMS?
I wanted to build a strong foundation in hotel operations while continuing to develop my passion for the industry. PIHMS stood out due to its comprehensive curriculum, covering all aspects of hotel management, combined with practical training and real-world industry placements. This provided valuable opportunities to gain hands-on experience, as well as to build professional networks within the industry.
In which way did the SixStar scholarship influence your decision to pursue a career in the hospitality and tourism industry?
The SixStar Scholarship played a significant role in enabling me to pursue a career in hospitality. It provided both financial support and motivation, allowing me to focus on my studies and remain committed to achieving my long-term goals within the industry.
Where did you undertake your internship? What was the most important take away from your internship?
My first industry placement was at Matakauri Lodge in Queenstown, where I worked as a Food and Beverage Attendant. This was a highly rewarding and challenging experience, offering extensive learning opportunities. Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, I was able to broaden my knowledge across areas such as wine and food pairings, cocktail preparation, culinary terminology, five-star service, and private dining. This experience significantly enhanced my guest service skills, confidence, and professional network.
My second placement was at Westin / Four points by Sheraton (Complex Hotels) in Brisbane Australia where I worked as a Front Office Generalist. This role strengthened my resilience, time management, and ability to perform under pressure. It also reinforced the importance of maintaining a willingness to learn, as this fosters valuable mentorship and career development opportunities. Additionally, working in a larger hotel environment exposed me to a fast-paced operation and a diverse range of cultures.
Your experience as a professional in the hospitality and tourism industry:
Which were the next steps in your journey since leaving PIHMS?
After graduating from PIHMS in 2023, I took on the role of Duty Manager at Clarence Boutique Hotel in Tauranga. After a year in this position, I decided to pursue a personal goal of travelling the world, which I did for two months at the end of 2024. Following this, I relocated to Edinburgh, Scotland, where I currently work at The Resident Hotel Edinburgh, part of the Sirius Hotel Group.
In my current role as the first and only Reservations Agent within the company, I have the opportunity to shape and develop the position to best support the wider team. I am also gaining exposure to revenue management, which aligns with my long-term career aspirations.
How did your time at PIHMS help prepare you for your role/s in the industry?
PIHMS equipped me with the skills and confidence required to succeed in a dynamic hospitality environment. It developed my resilience and ability to effectively manage challenging situations, including resolving guest concerns. The combination of practical training and up-to-date industry knowledge has enabled me to work efficiently and continue progressing within my career.
How relevant was the SixStar Scholarship for starting your career in the industry?
The SixStar Scholarship was instrumental in providing me with the tools, skills, and opportunities necessary to establish a successful career in hospitality.
What do you enjoy most in your current role?
The team I work with is exceptional and plays a significant role in why I enjoy my job so much. I also value being part of a company that prioritises both its team members and its guests, empowering us to create memorable moments of magic that make each stay truly special. At the same time, the company strongly supports ongoing personal development and learning for every team member. I find it particularly rewarding to ensure guests feel valued from the very beginning of their booking journey through to their departure and beyond.
What are your plans for the future?
My long-term career goal is to transition into revenue management, beginning as a Revenue Analyst and progressing to a Revenue Manager role. I developed a strong interest in this area during my studies at PIHMS and am eager to continue building my expertise.
Ultimately, I aspire to open my own hotel, where I can deliver exceptional and authentic hospitality, drawing on the knowledge and experience I have gained throughout my career.
In addition, I am passionate about continuing to travel and explore new destinations and all they have to offer!
